Fall Curb Appeal: Simple Ways to Make Your Home Feel Welcoming

by Angela Hyde

Fall in West Michigan brings beautiful colors, cooler temperatures, and plenty of opportunities to make your home feel warm and inviting. It’s also a great time to give the outside of your home a little attention before winter arrives.

Whether you’re preparing to sell or simply want to enjoy your home this season, a few simple updates can make a noticeable difference.

Keep Up With the Leaves

Those colorful leaves are beautiful on the trees, but they can quickly make a yard look untidy once they start falling. Regularly rake or mulch leaves, clear walkways, and keep your front steps free of debris.

Refresh Your Front Entrance

Your entryway is one of the first things guests or potential buyers notice. Sweep the porch, clean the front door, replace a worn welcome mat, and consider adding a seasonal wreath or a few mums.

You don’t need to go overboard. A few thoughtful touches can make your home feel welcoming without overwhelming the space.

Don't Forget Your Landscaping

As summer flowers fade, remove dead plants and trim back landscaping where appropriate. Keeping garden beds neat and adding fresh mulch can help your exterior look cared for even as the growing season comes to an end.

Check Your Outdoor Lighting

With the sun setting earlier, exterior lighting becomes increasingly important. Make sure bulbs are working around entrances, walkways, garages, and patios. Good lighting adds both safety and curb appeal.

Enjoy Your Outdoor Spaces

Fall doesn’t mean you have to stop using your patio, porch, or deck. Clean up outdoor furniture, add a cozy throw, or create a comfortable spot to enjoy a crisp evening outside.

If you’re considering selling this fall or later this year, curb appeal is just one piece of preparing your home. I’m always happy to help you determine which projects are worth tackling and which ones you can skip before putting your home on the market.
